In 2024, Charli XCX took one of the most loaded words in the English language and wore it differently.
Brat. As in difficult. As in too much. As in the word thrown at girls who take up space, have opinions, and refuse to shrink for a room that wasn’t built to hold them at full volume.
She didn’t fight it. She flipped it. Put it on a neon green album cover in lowercase letters and turned it into the cultural moment of the year. Collins English Dictionary named it word of the year. A generation of women who had been handed that label like a verdict suddenly had a different relationship with it. Not a wound. A war cry.
That is a word flip. And it is exactly what we are building at She is.
Brat - it wasn’t just a vibe or an album or an aesthetic or a color. It was a woman using her platform, her art, and yes, her fashion, to say something the world needed to hear. And the world heard it because she made it impossible to look away from.
Women have been doing this forever. Wearing the message when the room won’t hear the words. And every single time, it changes something.
1913. Women cannot vote. The suffragettes are done asking nicely. So they show up instead, by the thousands, in coordinated white with purple and gold sashes. Not a fashion choice. A coordinated act of visual communication designed for maximum impact. White photographed clearly in black and white newsprint. It read as unity across a crowd of thousands. Purple for loyalty. Gold for courage. The message: we are here, and you will deal with us.
Then there is 1984.
Designer Katharine Hamnett gets invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street and walks in wearing an oversized T-shirt that reads “58% DON’T WANT PERSHING” directly in front of Margaret Thatcher’s face. Nuclear missile opposition. In the Prime Minister’s house. On a T-shirt. One shirt. One woman. Front page news around the world. She didn’t wait to be given the floor. She wore it in.
1987.
Six words on a black T-shirt: Silence = Death. During the AIDS crisis, when the government was actively looking away from a catastrophe and the cultural script was to pretend it wasn’t happening, ACT UP activists wore those words into every room they entered. It was not a fashion statement. It was a demand. We are here. This is real. Your silence is killing people. The red ribbon followed. Simple. Quiet. Unmistakable. One of the most recognized symbols of solidarity in modern history, not because it was beautiful, though it was, but because it meant something specific worn by specific people at a moment when meaning was everything.
These were not outfits. They were arguments worn on bodies, into rooms, every single day, until the world had no choice but to respond.
What all of these moments share isn’t the garment. It’s the understanding that clothing is the first thing a room sees before you speak. It walks in ahead of you. It makes the statement before anyone has decided whether to listen. And the women and activists who understood that used it on purpose, every single time.
We did not start She is. with a business plan. We started it with two words that had absolutely no business being thrown at us. Two women, excellent at their jobs, handed verdicts. Difficult. Combative. Not as a critique of her work. As a response to her confidence. A way to reframe her conviction as a flaw and suggest that the problem wasn’t the bias in the room. It was her, for refusing to disappear inside it.
We couldn’t stop thinking about what those words do when they land. How they follow a woman from review to review, room to room. Research shows consistently that the language used to evaluate women skews negative in ways that have nothing to do with performance and everything to do with bias so baked into workplace culture that most people don’t even notice they’re participating in it. The same quality that earns a man the word passionate earns a woman the word overwhelming. What makes him decisive makes her aggressive. What makes him confident makes her difficult.
Emotional. Bossy. Combative. Too much. Dramatic. Difficult.
Not descriptions. Instructions.
Be less.
Shrink.
Make yourself easier for this room to hold.
So we did what Charli did. What the suffragettes did. What the activists in those black T-shirts did. We flipped it.
Difficult becomes Determined. Combative becomes Direct. Bossy becomes Decisive.
Emotional becomes Invested. Same woman. Same energy. Same strengths that someone once handed back to her as a problem, reframed in language that belongs to her instead of to whoever picked up the pen and decided her excellence needed managing.

It becomes the quiet daily decision to own your own narrative instead of borrowing someone else’s version of you.
The suffragettes wore white because the room wouldn’t listen. The activists wore Silence = Death because the world needed to see them. Charli XCX wore Brat because a word that was meant to shrink her deserved to be something else entirely.
She is. exists for the same reason. Fashion has always been the move when words alone aren’t enough. It always will be.
